Here at Jigsaw Medical, we have a lot of complicated systems and applications that help contribute to us being one of the largest and most innovate medical companies in the industry today, and it’s building these systems that Senior Back-End Developer, Laura Stewart comes into her own!

Having joined in our sister company eJigsaw in March having previously worked at several agencies across the North-West, Laura has a wealth of experience in PHP and back-end development.

We had a catch-up with Laura, about her first couple of months with the Jigsaw group, her likes and dislikes, what interests her, and some other ‘interesting’ questions!

First of all, tea or coffee when you come into the office in the morning?

Coffee, I have a 4-year-old daughter so I’m usually pretty tired!!

What does a typical work day look like for yourself?

A typical day at the office usually consists of catching up with colleagues on work to be done, planning and scoping of projects, chatting to or meeting with clients, saying hi to Jenson our office puppy, lot and LOTS of coffee and of course a little bit of development here and there :)

How has your first couple of months been at Jigsaw House (you can be honest!)?

“I’ve loved every minute of working at eJigsaw so far.”

The work is really interesting and having the freedom to decide on which technologies I get to work on is a massive bonus.  They’re a really friendly bunch and working in the office with the larger team of the Jigsaw Group means there’s plenty going on around the office with beer Fridays, quizzes, regular days/nights out and charity events.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

Being included! I like that I’ve been included in everything from the minute I started, from meeting clients to decision making, to social activities.

Are there any technologies or techniques you’d like to master this year?

I’m looking forward to getting into PHP 7 properly along with checking out some newer framework versions such as Laravel 5+

Do you have any advice for someone wanting to get into Back-End Development?

Don’t believe everything you read on Stack Overflow.  There’s always more than one way to do something and don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Your headphones are on, you have a big deadline to meet for a client, what 5 songs would you have on your playlist to help get it done?

This is tough as it depends on what sort of mood I’m in…

  1. Slipknot – Left Behind
  2. Korn – Shoots and Ladders
  3. Staind – How About You
  4. Sara Bareilles – King of Anything
  5. Aerosmith – Dude look like a lady

Do you have any interests or hobbies outside of work?

My little girl keeps me pretty busy outside of work and other than that I love to bake (when I’m not trying to eat healthily!)

If you could meet and chat with one person dead or alive, who would it be?

I think it’d have to be my late Grampy so I can get his Christmas cake recipe from him and learn how to grow my own vegetables like he did.

Does the above sound like something you’d like to be involved in? Want to work at an exciting and growing company like Jigsaw? Get in touch and tell us why you would be a great fit for #TeamJigsaw!!
