  • This is for:

    Mountain Leaders, Ski Instructors, Mountain Guides, Canoe and Kayak Instructors, Duke of Edinburgh's Award Leaders. Anyone spending time in the outdoors or wilderness environments through recreational, voluntary or work related activities.

  • Objectives:

    This course is designed to give the necessary basic life support and first aid skills, including common injuries encountered in the outdoor and remote environment.

  • Certification:

    A 3 year Certificate of Competence will be awarded on successful completion of the course and assessment.

Course Summary

This outdoor first aid course is suitable for anyone involved in outdoor activities or remote work such as; mountain leaders, ski instructors, mountain guides, canoe instructors etc. It includes common first aid treatments specifically in the outdoor setting. This course is delivered by experienced pre-hospital practitioners who are regularly working in the remote / outdoor environment, it is largely delivered outdoors and includes a number of scenarios! - So wrap up warm!

Syllabus

  • Preparing for an outdoor trip and contents of a first aid kit
  • Patient assessment - Primary and Secondary Assessment
  • Identifying the Illness or Injury
  • Management of Illnesses and Injuries (Hypo/hyperthermia, Hypo/hyperglycaemia, Seizures, head injuries, fractures, sprains, strains, anaphylaxis, asthma etc)
  • Incident management - calling Mountain Rescue, 6 figure grid references, when to move casualties.
  • BLS and AED
  • Recovery position, log rolling, C-Spine control
